When Simon called her the next day, January’s immediate thought was that her ploy had been rumbled. It was almost a relief when Simon told her that security had been tightened so much at the research centre he was scared for his life.

“Will that affect your sales?” she asked, curious.

“Where’s the empathy?! But no, it won’t, thanks for asking.”

She then asked him to explain more about what he meant by saying security had been tightened.

“Scary hired werewolves are the muscle, but Cadence is here all the time. She watches everyone like a hawk. Especially me.”

“You should take it as a compliment,” January told him.

Simon sighed. “I’d rather the other one was here… Emerson. He’s far more my type.”

“He could kill you just the same as she could. Don’t forget, Cadence can become invisible - really invisible - not just on an ethereal plane.”

“Thanks for the reminder. I’ll be sure to wear my X-ray glasses at all times.”

“If you’re still able to be sarcastic it can’t be that bad.”

“Are you kidding? I’m on the edge here! You’re at home, nice and cosy, and I’m out on the frontline.” There was some inaudible grumbling January chose to find inaudible. She’d definitely heard her name followed by a few unrepeatable words.

“Look, even though this is all going on, I managed to find something else.” Simon took a deep breath. “I managed to go over to Delimon’s old desk. I slid the desk drawer out and there was something taped onto the bottom of it. I slipped that up my sleeve, lest anyone invisible be watching, and waited until I was safely home before I looked at what I’d found.”

“What was it?” January could barely contain her excitement. Had Delimon really been working on a way to kill The Clan? Had he already found what they were looking for?

“Strange markings. They looked like they’d been taken from a rubbing. I’ll draw them for you…” A moment later, January was looking at three blue glowing symbols floating in the air.

They looked awfully familiar.

“There are some others, too, but they’re pretty similar.”

“Was that all there was?” January asked, her heart sinking.

“Yeah, but they must be important, right? If he went to all of that trouble to hide them? I think it might have been what he died for. Where do you think he took the rubbings from?”

“A sword and shield,” January told him.

There was a pause.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I’ve already got them.” She took a deep breath. “Simon, I think Bruce Delimon was somehow responsible for the sword and shield getting into my hands in the first place. They were on the weapons rack when I went into the arena. I don’t know how he knew I’d choose the sword and shield.” She hesitated, thinking about the meanings behind the symbols and the knowledge that they weren’t just writing. They were magic - of a sort. “One of the symbols means destiny. Perhaps he thought I’d choose it because of that, or rather - they’d choose me.
